Binisafua (Binisafuller) is a quiet development of private houses about 20 minutes from both the port of Mahon and the airport. (There is no public transport to speak of, so hiring a car is essential).
This long-established settlement is situated on the south east coast of Menorca, alongside a deep rocky inlet providing a natural cove which is wonderful for swimming and snorkelling. The picturesque inlet is lined with traditional fishing boats, and the small bars / restaurants overlooking the seafront serve delicious fresh fish dishes as well as a variety of other food and drink.
Many of the settlements and villages in this area begin with 'Bini' which dates back to the Moorish occupation of the island - Bini means 'belonging to the son of' from 'Ben' the Arabic word for son. Try not to be too confused by the fact that each of these places has a number of different ways of spelling its name, in common with many other
Although Binisafua has a beautiful small sandy beach, a 5 - 10 minute drive along the coast road will take you to the pleasant resort of Binibeca (Binibequer) with its wide sheltered beach and shallow waters making it popular with families with younger children and non-swimmers.
A short distance inland from Binisafua is the charming small town of San Clemente (Sant Climent) which has a bank, good supermarket, shops and restaurants. The larger town of San Luis (Sant Lluis), founded by the French in the 18th century, is also nearby and well worth a visit. Traditional shops sell quality local produce including freshly made bread and pastries, and a lively weekly market is held in the main square. There are also many local bars and restaurants where you are guaranteed good food, including the local tapas.
